Why Boxer Puppy Prices Vary So Much

Look around and you will see Boxer puppies at very different prices. These are the main reasons:

  • How the puppies are raised. Puppies raised in a home, handled every day and socialized take far more time than puppies raised in a barn or kennel run.
  • Vet care before sale. A vet examination, vaccinations and a microchip all cost the breeder money. Check what is included before you compare prices.
  • Ears and tails. Docking and especially ear cropping add to a breeder's costs. See our guide to Boxer tails and ears.
  • Color marketing. Some sellers charge more for white or "rare" colors. Color has no effect on a Boxer's temperament, and a "black" Boxer is not a rare color but a very dark brindle. See Boxer colors.

What a Boxer Costs to Keep

The puppy is only the start. Plan for these before you commit:

  • Food: a large-breed puppy food at first, then an adult food. An adult Boxer eats a lot; feeding a Boxer explains how much.
  • Routine vet care: vaccination boosters, heartworm and flea and tick prevention, and an annual check-up. Ask your vet to listen to your Boxer's heart at every visit.
  • Pet insurance: worth considering from day one, before any condition can be excluded. Boxers are prone to some costly problems, including cancers and heart disease.
  • Training: a puppy class, then a basic manners class. A well-trained Boxer is a joy; an untrained one is 70 pounds of enthusiasm on a leash.
  • Setup and toys: a big crate, bed, harness, leash, bowls, gates, and chew toys tough enough to last.

What does a Boxer cost to keep?

Plan for a large-breed food, routine vet care (vaccination boosters, heartworm and flea prevention, an annual check-up), pet insurance if you want it, training classes, sturdy toys, and a crate, bed, collar and leash at the start. Boxers are big, strong chewers, so budget for toys that last.
